Sarawak Government’s Efforts to Improve Traffic Conditions
KUCHING: Sarawak will implement a temporary ban on goods vehicles during Hari Raya, in line with the Federal Government’s strategy to enhance road safety and ease traffic congestion.
State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin announced that the restrictions would be imposed on selected dates, which will be confirmed soon.
“We are coordinating with JPJ, and an official notice will be issued shortly. Similar measures were taken during Chinese New Year, as part of our long-standing efforts to improve road safety during festive periods,” he said at the launch of Sarawak’s Hari Raya road safety campaign on Wednesday (March 12).
Minimizing Accident Risks During Peak Travel Periods
On Monday (March 10), federal Transport Minister Anthony Loke declared that goods vehicles nationwide would be restricted from March 29-30 and April 5-6 to prevent accidents and traffic congestion.
He emphasized that keeping heavy vehicles off the roads during these peak periods reduces accident risks and ensures smoother traffic flow for holiday travelers.
“Many families travel long distances to celebrate Hari Raya, and we want to minimize any risks associated with heavy vehicles. This temporary measure will ensure that private cars can move freely without major disruptions,” Loke stated.
This move follows the government’s previous actions during Chinese New Year, where a similar restriction was enforced to maintain better road conditions and minimize accidents caused by large commercial vehicles.
Safety Awareness Through Hari Raya Green Packets
Meanwhile, Lee revealed that Sarawak’s road safety campaign would officially begin on March 17 in Mukah, reinforcing safe driving messages through the distribution of special Raya-themed green packets.
“We successfully launched red packets with safety messages during Chinese New Year, and we are now introducing green packets for Hari Raya, continuing our road safety awareness efforts,” he said.
Featuring illustrations of Sarawak’s transportation landscape, including roads, waterways, and AirBorneo, the packets will carry reminders about safe driving practices such as wearing seat belts, using helmets, and adhering to speed limits.
“We urge all road users to remain cautious and ensure a safe journey home for Hari Raya,” Lee added.
