Policy Changes Due to Safety Risks
KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that from July 1, 2025, Malaysia will prohibit natural gas vehicles (NGVs) from being registered or used, with the policy driven by safety concerns. The Cabinet approved this change on October 2, and PETRONAS will stop selling NGV fuel by the same date.
Aid Available for Vehicle Transition
Loke highlighted that qualifying NGV owners would receive a RM3,000 voucher to assist in transitioning to petrol vehicles, with applications for NGV-only vehicles closing on December 31 and dual-fuel vehicles on April 30, 2025.
There are currently 9,509 NGV taxis, 32,137 privately registered NGVs, 2,150 natural-gas-powered buses and trucks, and 587 NGVs used in machinery.
