Kota Bharu Leads in Halal Certification Policy

Halal Certification for License Renewals

Kelantan’s state government now requires businesses to obtain Malaysian Halal Certification as a prerequisite for renewing their operating licenses.

Kota Bharu as the Starting Point

State Islamic Development chairman Mohd Asri Mat Daud announced that the Kota Bharu Municipal Council-Islamic City will spearhead this initiative, with other regions expected to adopt it soon.
“This policy will soon be extended statewide, Insya-Allah,” he remarked during the Halal Certificate Handover Ceremony held in Pasir Hor on Dec 26.

Over 450 Certifications Issued in 2024

Since the start of the year, 453 certificates have been issued across the state, according to reports by Utusan Malaysia. These include businesses such as hotels, restaurants, pharmacies, hair salons, and food outlets.
Mohd Asri highlighted that 405 Malay entrepreneurs and 48 non-Islamic premises have received certifications so far.

Ensuring Compliance and Regular Checks

He explained that certification involves eight conditions, covering food preparation, kitchen practices, and the use of approved halal products.
To maintain compliance, inspections will be conducted by multiple agencies, including Jakim, the Health Ministry, and the Domestic Trade Ministry.

Kota Bharu Tops the List

Kota Bharu leads with the highest number of certified businesses at nearly 190, while other districts report a handful of certified premises. Surprise checks are routinely carried out to uphold standards.
