Loke to Consider Senior Licence Renewal

Senior Citizens and Licence Renewal Proposal

SEPANG: The Ministry of Transport will consider a proposal that would require individuals aged 65 and older to undergo health and competency assessments before renewing their driving licences.

Minister Anthony Loke commented on the matter, stating that while the suggestion is under consideration, a thorough evaluation will be conducted before any official decisions are made.

“We will examine the report in detail and avoid rushing into any new regulations,” Loke explained during a press conference after leading the National Logistics Task Force meeting on Monday (Nov 25).

Questions Regarding Health and Competency Tests for Elderly Drivers

Loke was responding to concerns about the necessity of health and competency assessments for senior citizens seeking to renew their licences.

Recent reports have suggested that the number of road accidents involving elderly drivers has been rising, and implementing additional renewal requirements could help mitigate this issue.

A suggestion that has gained attention is the implementation of mandatory competency and health assessments for senior drivers aged 65 and above, as there is currently no legal maximum age for driving in Malaysia.

Logistics Hub Plans in Negeri Sembilan

In related news, Loke confirmed that Negeri Sembilan would host the new logistics hub, with a location in Nilai currently being reviewed.

“The state government is supporting this initiative and is in the process of identifying appropriate land for development,” Loke said.

Furthermore, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority provided an update during the meeting on incentives designed to attract investments for the Smart Logistics Complex, including tax breaks of up to 70%, as outlined in Budget 2025. – Bernama
