An End to an 18-Year Wait

PETALING JAYA: Diver Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohd Nazim has brought glory to Malaysia by ending the nation’s 18-year wait for a medal at the World Junior Diving Championships.

A Well-Earned Bronze

Competing in the boy’s 3m springboard final (16-18 years) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 18-year-old secured a bronze medal with a total of 506.75 points. The gold went to China’s Yan Xin, who scored an impressive 546.60 points, while Norway’s Isak Borslien narrowly edged Nurqayyum with 508.35 points to claim silver.

Other Malaysian Diver’s Results

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Yong Rui Jie placed 10th with 440.30 points in the same event.

Strong Start in Preliminaries

Nurqayyum’s performance followed a strong start in the preliminaries, where he placed second with 479.30 points, trailing only Yan Xin’s 524.85.

A Historic Return to the Podium

This feat makes Nurqayyum the first Malaysian diver since Bryan Nickson Lomas to reach the podium at the world junior level. Bryan took bronze in the boy’s 10m platform event (16-18 years) in 2006 and won gold in the 3m springboard event at the 2004 edition in Belem, Brazil.
