PETALING JAYA: The recent extension of visa-free entry for Malaysians and Chinese nationals to 30 days marks a new chapter in Malaysia-China relations, with tourism and economic growth set to thrive, according to the Malaysian Tourism Federation.

Federation president Datuk Tan Kok Liang welcomed the extension, saying it aligns with Malaysia’s policy for Chinese visitors and opens new possibilities for travel and business. “This is a win-win situation. Longer visa-free stays mean more time to explore cultural treasures and economic opportunities,” he said.

Policy to Drive Tourism Demand

China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry declared that Malaysian citizens can enjoy visa-free travel from Nov 30, 2023, until Dec 31, 2025. This shift is expected to fuel demand for tailored travel experiences, extending beyond the traditional 15-day itineraries.

Economic Opportunities for Businesses

Local businesses stand to gain significantly, with the policy paving the way for deeper partnerships in manufacturing, IT, and other industries. “This is a golden opportunity for Malaysian businesses to expand their reach,” Tan noted.

Towards a Permanent Solution

Malaysia Chinese Business Council director Datuk Beh Hang Kong praised the arrangement, emphasizing its reflection of mutual trust. He added that the savings on visa fees would further encourage travel and business exchanges.

While advocating for a permanent visa-free agreement, Tan cautioned that adequate checks and balances are essential to prevent abuse. Beh agreed, stressing the importance of safeguarding Malaysia’s borders to maintain the integrity of the arrangement.
