

Incident Overview: Fatal Fire in Hougang
On January 9, a fire broke out at Block 971 Hougang Street 91, leaving three people dead and forcing the evacuation of dozens of residents. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was notified of the fire at around 12:40 pm.
Victim Identification and Discovery
Firefighters found two victims in a bedroom during their operation. A third victim was later discovered in another bedroom. Entry to the unit was difficult due to the large volume of personal belongings inside.
Evacuation and Animal Rescues
Evacuations were carried out with assistance from the police, affecting residents on the first seven floors of the 15-storey building. By 3:15 pm, the fire had been controlled, and a cat, bird, and eight rabbits were rescued from the unit.
Witnesses Share Observations
Several residents in nearby blocks reported hearing loud bangs and seeing smoke. One hawker, who lives opposite the block, noticed the smell of burning material around 1 pm.
Impact on Local Residents
Said, a resident of the second floor, described the occupant of the unit as an elderly man who often walked his dog. Another evacuee said she had been unable to return home for several hours and expressed her concern.
Ongoing Investigation and Support for Evacuated Residents
MP Ng Ling Ling updated the public on the authorities’ ongoing efforts to identify the victims. Affected residents can seek assistance at the residents’ network centre at Block 976.
Town Council’s Response to the Fire
The Ang Mo Kio Town Council has assisted in cleaning up debris and soot from the fire. The council is also coordinating with HDB to address hoarding issues in the affected unit.
