Fraudulent Investment Scheme Targets Victim

JOHOR BARU: A senior citizen from New Zealand was duped out of RM216,000 in an online investment scam. The incident began on Oct 2 when the victim was approached by a scammer posing as “Michael Wong.”

Scheme Promises Lucrative Returns

The scam involved an investment platform, https://m.worldcoinkk.com, which promised monthly returns of 3% to 5%. Attracted by these claims, the victim transferred money in 27 transactions to SPB International Sdn. Bhd.’s bank account.

Victim Reports Scam After Suspicions Arise

When Wong demanded additional payments, the victim declined and realized he had been scammed after receiving no returns. He reported the matter to the police on Nov 28, revealing he had lost his life savings.

Police Investigate Under Section 420

The case, filed under Section 420 of the Penal Code, may lead to imprisonment, caning, and fines for those involved. Investigations also focus on “money mules” used to facilitate the scam.

Protecting Against Online Scams

ACP Balveer Singh urged the public to be cautious and double-check the legitimacy of online investments. Tools like Semak Mule and the NSRC hotline are available for assistance.
