Malaysia Airlines Strategic Move to Modernize Fleet
PUTRAJAYA: In an effort to enhance its operational capabilities, Malaysia Airlines has confirmed the acquisition of 30 new aircraft while keeping the option open to purchase an additional 30 planes in the future. The decision is part of the airline’s ongoing strategy to maintain a competitive edge and avoid the operational issues experienced last year.
Malaysia Aviation Group managing director Captain Datuk Izham Ismail announced that the new additions include 18 Boeing 737-8 and 12 Boeing 737-10 aircraft, all equipped with the latest CFM International LEAP-18 engines. These planes are expected to significantly improve the airline’s efficiency and overall performance.
Delivery and Future Readiness
According to Izham, Malaysia Airlines has already received 11 aircraft, with the remaining jets scheduled for phased delivery through 2027. Speaking at an official event alongside representatives from The Boeing Company, he emphasized the importance of proper timing in fleet expansion.
“Planning our fleet expansion carefully ensures we do not repeat past mistakes. The disruptions we faced last year due to an ageing fleet and supply chain bottlenecks were a lesson, and this acquisition is designed to address those challenges,” he stated.

Commitment to Operational Excellence
Izham reiterated that Malaysia Airlines’ decision to upgrade its fleet aligns with its broader vision of improving passenger experience, fuel efficiency, and safety. He noted that having a modernized fleet is essential for maintaining reliability and keeping up with industry standards.
“We aim to provide the best experience for our passengers while optimizing costs and efficiency. These new aircraft will play a vital role in achieving that,” he said.
